Amanita Music Player opens the selected device through Core Audio HAL, asks it to follow the track’s native sample rate, and sends decoded PCM without app-level EQ, normalization, or effects when volume is 100% and balance is Center. Changing either control applies DSP; the device and source must still support the requested format for bit-perfect playback.

During playback, Amanita Music Player reports whether the path is BIT-PERFECT, DIRECT PCM, DSP ACTIVE, or CONVERTED instead of assuming that every device accepted the request.

Why it matters

Two safeguards.
One clean signal.

Sample-rate matching keeps the source from being converted to an unrelated device rate. Optional Exclusive Access goes further by keeping other apps off that output. Neither adds detail or “enhances” a recording; both reduce avoidable work before the signal reaches your audio device.

Bit-perfect playback

With a lossless file and compatible output device, Amanita Music Player can verify that decoded PCM leaves the player at the track’s native sample rate and without app-level processing.

  • Avoids unnecessary resamplingA 44.1 kHz track stays at 44.1 kHz; a 96 kHz track stays at 96 kHz when the device accepts the requested format.
  • Preserves the decoded samplesAt 100% volume and Center balance, the player inserts no gain changes or other app-level processing into the path. Adjusting either control applies DSP by design.
  • Matches instead of upsamplingA higher sample-rate number is not treated as “better.” The goal is to follow the source without an extra conversion.

WAV and AIFF PCM are read directly; FLAC is decoded losslessly at its original sample rate. MP3 uses the same clean output path, but cannot restore information removed by lossy encoding.

Exclusive Access

Exclusive Access is off by default. Turn it on when you want Amanita Music Player to ask macOS for sole control of the selected output. Amanita verifies actual ownership and automatically restores it if the driver releases the device.

  • No shared system mixNotifications, browser audio, and other players cannot be mixed into the same output device.
  • A stable hardware formatAnother app cannot hold the device at a rate chosen for a different stream or change it underneath the track.
  • Control when you need itThe player remembers your choice. Turn the switch off or press Stop to release the device; Pause keeps it reserved for a clean resume.

Exclusive Access does not guarantee bit-perfect playback by itself, and support depends on the device driver. Other apps may be silent on that output while it is reserved.

The badge in the player describes what the selected device actually reported for the current track.

BIT-PERFECT

Lossless source, matching sample rate and PCM format, a compatible physical stream, and app DSP bypassed at 100% volume and Center balance are confirmed. The detail also reports whether access is shared or exclusive.

DIRECT PCM

No app-level DSP is active at 100% volume and Center balance, but the source is lossy or the driver cannot expose enough information to verify the complete path.

CONVERTED

The reported sample rate or PCM format differs, so Core Audio or the device may be converting the stream.

DSP ACTIVE

Software volume or stereo balance is changed, so the player applies DSP. Resetting to 100% volume and Center balance bypasses it again; device and source compatibility still determine whether the path is bit-perfect.
